“Excess,” created for my MA Photography program at The Cass Faculty of Art. My images of large-bottomed women waddling past food stands, trashy souvenirs and cheap goods optimistically displayed, a homeless man sleeping under a designer furniture window all contain an element of humor and sympathy. It’s evident even in the darker range of my photo-essay—trash clogging a once-pristine canal is a grinning inflatable crocodile.
My intention was to frame what we avoid looking at and don’t like to think about in a blameless way that doesn’t shut down the mind of the viewer—an advertising lesson learned in communicating to millions. In the photojournalistic tradition, I wanted to create awareness and change attitudes through the images I present in this and future projects.
